The IRS has officially extended the deadline for the 2019 federal personal tax returns. As the world grapples with the effects of Covid-19, the US government has been considering ways to help American families. Originally, the filing deadline remained the same, while all tax payments would be extended to 7/15/2020. Now, they have officially moved the tax filing deadline to 7/15/2020 as well. Please keep in mind that each state deadline may be different. As of currently, the California tax return is due 6/15/2020 while Maryland is 7/15/2020. So, please double check with your state.
This also means that IRA and Roth IRA contributions for 2019 have now been extended until 7/15/2020. “There’s never been a date in the tax code, it’s always been tied to the filing deadline,” Ed Slott, [founded of IRAhelp.com] said. “[By extending the tax deadline], they automatically extended the deadline to make an IRA contribution last year.”
This adjustment is only for this one year. 2020 tax returns are due 4/15/2021.
